Vernon County Jane Doe (1984)
Vernon County Jane Doe
On May 4th, 1984, at 23:15, 3 teenagers found the recently deceased body of a woman near the town of Westby, Winsconsin. She was estimated to have died within the last 24 to 48 hours. In reason of the extensive damage to her head, she was not recognizable until after mortuary procedures had been performed on her.
After the discovery was reported on by the news, a couple called in a tip concerning a strange man that was seen near the location the woman was found. They stated that he was returning to the driver's side of a 1982 yellow Datsun. When police officers went to the spot they could see tire marks left by a hasty u-turn. They also found a man's watch, broken denture and blood. With this evidence law enforcement thought she had been killed along the road and her body dumped where she was found.
The victim had suffered blunt force trauma to her head, which broke her eye socket, her jaw and the dentures she was wearing, she also suffered sharp force trauma near her left ear. Her hands were also missing, probably to prevent fingerprint identification.
Vernon County Jane Doe was estimated to have been aged between 50 and 65 years old when she was murdered. She was approximately 1m70 (5''5' or 5''6') tall and weigthed around 68 kg (150 pounds). She wore dentures, most likely the ones that were found near her body. Even though it seems like those dentures had a serial number indended into them, investigators were unable to use this piece of information since they state that the numbers for specific products were not included on receipts. She was wearing a multicolored coat, a black dress with a blue paisley pattern, a blue turtleneck and nylon stocking. The tags of the clothing had been removed but there were distinct buttons and unique stitching on the clothes.
After receiving 4000 tips and following multiples leads, law enforcement were still unable to identify this victim. In 2015, her body was exhumed to collect DNA samples, DNA analysis was tried by the University of Texas but it didn't give any results. The DNA Doe project chose her case in 2019 and is currently being tested to undergo genealogical testing to try to give Vernon County Jane Doe her name back.
